Anthony Volpe, amid wonderings from corners of the fanbase if he should be sent down, shined on Sunday with a single and a massive home run to turn a 2-1 lead into a 4-1 cushion in the ninth inning.
It’s been a tough go for Volpe in his rookie year, as he is batting just .193 in a league-leading 61 games played, and Boomer believes he has the solution to maximize the infield and set the Bombers up for the future.
It starts with calling up the red-hot Oswald Peraza and making him the starting shortstop.
“They put him there, put Volpe at second base, and trade Gleyber Torres,” Boomer said.
Some expect Volpe to become the long-term second baseman if Peraza, widely considered to be the superior defender between the two, can prove his bat is capable of thriving in the big leagues. Peraza was called up down the stretch last year and hovered around a .300 batting average, but struggled this season before going down with an injury. Now, he is looking ready for a call-up, batting .324 with 10 home runs in Triple-A.
Regardless of what Peraza’s next move mans for Volpe, Boomer and Gio both agree that Volpe needs to be cut some slack, and the comparisons to Derek Jeter need to slow down.
“If you’re the starting shortstop for the Yankees, and you’re in your rookie season, can we give the kid a chance?” Boomer said. “That just isn’t fair.”
