Chasen Shreve is back with the Yankees, signed to a minor-league deal on Saturday, and he will likely report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Shreve, 32, was originally acquired by the Yankees on January 1, 2015, dealt along with RHP David Carpenter from Atlanta for LHP Manny Banuelos. He spent parts of the next four seasons with the Yankees, posting a 3.92 ERA in 174 2/3 innings over 180 games before he and RHP Gio Gallegos were dealt to St. Louis at the 2018 trade deadline for Luke Voit.
The lefty has since pitched for the Cardinals (2018-19), Mets (2020 and 2022), and Pirates (2021), and just last year posted a 3.20 ERA in 56 1/3 innings for Pittsburgh.
Shreve was 1-1 with a 6.49 ERA in 26 1/3 innings with the Mets this season before being released in July, and he has not pitched since.
The Yankees’ relief corps has been decimated by injuries at both the MLB and Triple-A level. With just two healthy pitchers – Deivi Garcia and Yoendrys Gomez – on the 40-man in the minors, the departures of Aroldis Chapman and Nestor Cortes going on the IL this week forced the Yankees to move Clarke Schmidt to the rotation and make two non-40-man roster additions, calling up RHP Greg Weissert on Thursday and signing LHP Anthony Banda from free agency on Sunday.
At Triple-A, meanwhile, the Yankees have three pitchers on the COVID-19 list, and also lost Jhony Brito and Shane Greene to injury earlier this month.
