The Yankees have added a couple more depth pieces, signing 1B/OF Ronald Guzman and utility man Phillip Evans to minor-league deals.
Guzman, 27, played just seven games due to injury last year, but slashed .227/.304/.414 with 31 homers and 104 RBI in 243 games for the Rangers over parts of four seasons. The lefty hitter’s name may be familiar to Yankees fans for the August 2018 game where he hit three homers at Yankee Stadium.
He is actually now the third member of the Rangers’ primary 2020 infield to end up in pinstripes, joining Isiah Kiner-Falefa (then the Rangers’ 3B, now Yankees shortstop) on the current team as well as 2021 Yankee Rougned Odor.
Evans, 29, was a former 15th-round pick of the Mets who split last season between the Pirates and their Triple-A affiliate, slashing .206/.312/.299 with five homers in 76 MLB games. He is a career .231 hitter in 121 games over parts of four seasons with the Mets and Pirates, and has played first, second, third, and both outfield corners in the Majors. He also was a shortstop in his early years in the Mets’ system.
