The Freddie Freeman sweepstakes are reportedly expected to come to an end very soon, and the Dodgers and Braves appear to be among the top candidates for the former MVP.
But don’t count out the Yankees just yet.
According to Audacy MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Yanks are “still in” on Freeman as of Saturday afternoon, though they face a geographical challenge since Freeman lives in both Florida and California. But the Yanks faced a similar obstacle when trying to woo CC Sabathia before the 2009 season, and they made sure money talked in that instance.
The Yankees reportedly “love” Freeman, and for good reason. He would provide the lefty power bat and consistently durable performer that New York craves at first base. The Yanks have reportedly sought similar options in the form of a trade for Matt Olson, but the asking price was too high.
Jon Morosi of MLB Network reported on Friday that the Dodgers were making a strong push for the five-time All-Star, so the Yankees would likely have to be ready to cut a big check to win over Freeman.
