Miguel Castro is set to be the latest injured reliever to rejoin the Yankees, as manager Aaron Boone revealed Sunday that Castro is set to be activated off the 60-day injured list on Monday and be available for the final series of the season in Texas.
The Yankees have an open 40-man roster spot after moving Matt Carpenter to the 60-day IL Sunday, and it is expected that Castro will take the 28-man roster spot of Chi Chi Gonzalez, who was added to the roster to start Sunday’s game.
Castro, who was acquired this winter from the Mets for Joely Rodriguez, has been on the injured list retroactive to July 13 with a right shoulder strain. He had a 4.00 ERA in 27 innings before the injury, and he threw 4 2/3 innings over six rehab outings.
Boone also revealed that Albert Abreu is ready to return and “remains in play,” but Stephen Ridings, who has been out all year with a shoulder impingement, will not be activated at all.
Gonzalez was added to start Sunday’s game, given the Yankees’ need for an extra starter due to Tuesday’s doubleheader in Texas and the possibility of inclement weather in New York on Sunday meaning the team did not want to potentially waste someone’s final start.
The Yankees are Gonzalez’s fourth organization of the season; he had spent time with Milwaukee and Minnesota, as well as in Triple-A with the Tigers, before signing with the Yankees at the end of August. He made five starts at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, posting a 3.63 ERA in 22 1/3 innings.
Jacob Barnes, who was added Saturday and threw the final 1 2/3 innings of the Yankees’ win over Baltimore, was designated for assignment to make room for Gonzalez.
