Yankees to call up No. 6 prospect Luis Gil to start Tuesday's game

It won’t be Nasty Nestor tonight – instead, the Yankees will call up their No. 6 prospect, RHP Luis Gil, from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start Tuesday night’s game with the Orioles in place of Gerrit Cole.

Gil has split this season between Double-A Somerset and Triple-A, posting a 2.64 ERA in 30 2/3 innings with Somerset and a 5.64 ERA in 30 1/3 innings with SWB. He does have 88 strikeouts in those 61 innings, though, and will be pitching on five days’ rest after last appearing at Triple-A on July 27.

Immediately after announcing Cole’s positive COVID test last night, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he wasn’t fully sure who would take tonight’s start, but it would “likely be” Nestor Cortes. However, Gil began posting well-wishes about being called up to the Majors late Monday night on his Instagram story:

Cortes had been penciled in to take Domingo German’s next turn in the rotation, scheduled for Thursday, after German was placed on the IL with a rotator cuff strain, and it appears that will remain the case.

Instead, Gil will become the 12th different starting pitcher for the Yankees in their first 106 games, one day after Andrew Heaney became the 11th in 105 games.
