Yankees trade C Christian Bethancourt to Pirates for cash

The Yankees announced a minor deal on Wednesday: they have traded catcher Christian Bethancourt to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash considerations.

Bethancourt, who turns 35 in September, signed a minor-league deal late last month after being released by the Cubs, and he was 8-fpr-24 with three home runs, 7 RBI, and seven runs scored in eight games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

However, the Yankees added Mitch Garver on a minor-league deal earlier this month and assigned hm to Triple-A, so Bethancourt became a saleable asset – and as he has not been on a 40-man roster at all this year, having spent most of the year with the Cubs’ AAA affiliate, he is eligible to be dealt even though the trade deadline has passed.

Bethancourt will be assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis, per the Pirates’ roster page on MLB.com.
