The Yankees are reportedly out on Pablo Lopez talks, and pivoted to outfield at the expense of a rotation mainstay.
According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, and later confirmed by the team, the Bombers are trading lefty starter Jordan Montgomery to the Cardinals for center fielder Harrison Bader, who is currently on the IL with plantar fasciitis, a foot injury that once plagued Greg Bird during his time in pinstripes.
Bader, 28, is a native of Bronxville, New York, and is signed through next season on a two-year, $10.4 million deal. The move helps the Yanks upgrade their outfield defense while giving Aaron Judge more rest from playing center field, which is more taxing than the smaller right field at Yankee Stadium.
Bader has a .673 OPS with five home runs in 246 at-bats on the season, while Montgomery departs New York after six seasons, currently tied for the league lead with 21 starts while holding a 3.69 ERA.
