Yankees outfielder Trey Amburgey left Sunday night’s game against the Red Sox after the fourth inning with what the team termed a right hamstring cramp, after appearing to tweak his right leg running out what turned out to be a double play ball.
Amburgey grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the fourth, and appeared to tweak something as he crossed the first base bag. He came up limping and was trying to stretch his right leg out, but was visited by trainers and removed from the game.
“Trey pulled up running through the bag there. I don’t know if it was a cramp or a hammy or what, but he had to come out of the game,” manager Aaron Boone told ESPN’s announce crew during his in-game interview just after the situation unfolded, adding after the game that the team was still figuring out whether or not it may be a low-grade strain.
Brett Gardner replaced Amburgey, who was the right fielder, when the Yankees came out for defense, with Greg Allen moving from center to left and Ryan LaMarre moving from left to right.
The Yankees got another scare shortly after, when, with one out in the fifth inning, LaMarre tried to make a leaping catch at the wall, but ended up hitting the wall and landing awkwardly in the splits. He stayed down for a minute as Gardner threw the ball back in, but after a visit from the trainers and Boone, LaMarre remained in the game.
