New York Yankees left-hander Wandy Peralta successfully began a rehab assignment on Thursday night, pitching a scoreless inning for Double-A Somerset.
Peralta has been on the COVID-19 injured list since July 15, one of five players the Yankees lost just after the All-Star break due to coronavirus concerns. The lefty pitched the sixth inning in the Patriots’ eventual 7-6 victory over Reading, working around a two-out walk while recording one strikeout. Peralta actually got the win for that effort, as he entered the game with Somerset down 3-2, but the Patriots scored four in the top of the seventh and never relinquished the lead.
So far this season, Peralta is 1-1 with a 5.19 ERA in 17 1/3 innings over 22 games since coming over from San Francisco in a deal for outfielder Mike Tauchman, who was actually designated for assignment by the Giants earlier this week.
Peralta’s rehab was one of four positive pieces of news around the Yankees on a day where they officially acquired both Anthony Rizzo and Joey Gallo, and saw Luis Severino throw a 50-pitch simulated game as his last outing before beginning an official rehab assignment next week.
