Gerrit Cole and the Yankees were in a bases-loaded jam to start Friday night’s game against the White Sox, and tried for an inning-ending double play when Jose Trevino fired to third base in an attempt to nab Tim Anderson after a strikeout.
Anderson slid back in safely, after a hard tag by Josh Donaldson, who also appeared to push the Chicago shortstop off the bag in an attempt to steal an out.
“It was just a baseball play,” Donaldson said. “He probably didn’t like that I was aggressive with the tag there. Understood, but at the end of the day, we’re playing baseball, and we’re trying to get outs.”
Players from both benches wandered onto the field as Donaldson and Anderson exchanged words, but nothing boiled over, and the Yanks got the last laugh in their second straight victory against Chicago, posting double-digit runs in both games.
