As the Orioles swing a blockbuster trade for Corbin Burnes, many Yankee fans are clamoring for their team to respond by signing one of the big-name starting pitchers still available on the free agent market.
That reportedly won’t be happening after the Yankees offered Blake Snell a deal that would have surpassed their last free agent starter signing.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yanks made an offer to the reigning National League Cy Young winner, and were willing to go “above Rodon,” meaning they were prepared to pay the lefty more than the $162 million they paid Carlos Rodon, who had a disastrous debut season in the Bronx in 2023.
Rodon is being paid $27 million per year, but Snell is reportedly seeking $30 million or more per year over seven years, and the Yankees may have been turned off on committing that amount of money to a starter after Rodon’s awful introduction.
Of course, the Yanks have had recent success with big-name free agent signings as well, including Gerrit Cole, Masahiro Tanaka, and CC Sabathia.
