BT has long believed that the Yankees would be better off eating the bulk of Giancarlo Stanton’s salary to move him and open up a spot for younger, more durable players, and he has faith that Labor Day weekend was the first step towards that reality.
The debut of Jasson Dominguez gave the Yanks a glimpse at the future, where a steady switch-hitting bat could give the team much more flexibility than the oft-injured Stanton, who is mainly confined to a DH role while consistently enduring prolonged slumps upon returns from the IL.
Could a glimpse at an energetic, youthful roster motivate ownership to bite the bullet and move on from Stanton?
“Because there are now younger, athletic, more viable bodies on the scene…that is going to be evidence and motivation enough for Hal [Steinbrenner] to get rid of Stanton,” BT said.
“Dominguez, he’s obviously viable. He’s your No. 1 prospect. You got Wells, he’s your No. 2, you got Volpe and Judge, and whether it’s Pereira or Cabrera or whoever, I really think Stanton is gonna be gone.”
If that happens this winter, and the Yankees find a team willing to take on Stanton and a portion of his contract, then BT would be even more excited for the future of the Bombers.
“That changes everything with how I view the Yankees,” BT said.
