Zack Britton said he hoped to pitch in 2022 after undergoing Tommy John surgery back in September, and the lefty reliever could be ahead of schedule.
Aaron Boone told reporters on Wednesday that Britton is “doing really well,” via Kristie Ackert of the Daily News, and is throwing at 120 feet. Boone added that the heavy sinkerballer could even begin throwing off a mound soon.
Of course, there are still plenty of hurdles to clear, as Britton will need to begin throwing off a mound, then face live hitters, then complete a rehab assignment before returning to the team. But just eighth months removed from his surgery, it is a promising sign that he is as far along as he is as of Wednesday.
Britton has battled multiple injuries in recent years, but when healthy, was a key bullpen arm for the Yanks. He only pitched in 22 games last season as other elbow issues plagued his 2021 campaign, but the pending free agent holds a 2.69 ERA in 133 appearances in pinstripes.
