Zack Britton to undergo surgery to remove bone chip from left elbow

New York Yankees lefthander Zack Britton has a bone chip in his left elbow, and will undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove it in the upcoming days.

The Yankees announced the diagnosis just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, hours after manager Aaron Boone revealed that Britton felt some discomfort after Sunday’s bullpen session, and underwent an MRI on Monday. Per the team, Britton will return to New York, and the surgery is expected to be performed by Dr. Christopher Ahmad at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

No timetable was given for Britton’s return, but Newsday's David Lennon gave a potential rough timeline.

ESPN's Marly RIvera notes that the Yankees pegged Gio Urshela's recovery from December surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow as three months, and Urshela was indeed ready to go when players reported to camp.

Britton was being brought along slowly this spring after revealing that he contracted COVID-19 in January, but was expected to be ready for Opening Day prior to this injury. The lefty has been one of the Yankees’ most reliable bullpen arms since arriving in 2018, posting a 2/14 ERA in 105.1 innings over his two-plus seasons in New York.
