The NHL Trade Deadline has come and gone after the 3 p.m. passed on Monday.
Unlike past years where the team finds themselves as sellers heading into the deadline, the Buffalo Sabres ended up buying for the future on the blue line with the acquisition of defenseman Brandon Montour from the Anaheim Ducks. In return, the Sabres sent Anaheim defenseman Brendan Guhle and a conditional first round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.
The Sabres did have two other first round picks in 2019 to play around with, but Botterill had reportedly said that he would not trade any of his picks for rental players on the market.
The only player who had potential to get any value for the Sabres on the trade market was Jeff Skinner, who will become an unrestricted free agent to start the new league year on July 1. However, it seems as though Sabres general manager Jason Botterill was more focused on getting Skinner signed to a contract extension for years to come.
Buffalo was also able to swing a deal with the Winnipeg Jets, sending defenseman Nathan Beaulieu to Winnipeg for a sixth round pick.
