The 18-year-old was passed over in last year's NHL Draft, and was not even ranked on the European goaltender list by NHL Central Scouting. The 6' 6" and 207-pound native of Gothenburg, Sweden put up some stellar stats last season with Frölunda's Under-20 junior team with a 1.99 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage in 26 games.
Portillo is committed to play at Michigan University to start the 2020-21 season, while his USHL rights are currently held by the Dubuque Fighting Saints.
