For the first time in the long history of the Kentucky Derby, the horse who crossed the line first has been disqualified.
The 145th Kentucky Derby took place Saturday evening from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The track was wet, sloppy and full of puddles for the annual Run for the Roses due to some inclement weather conditions throughout the day.
Maximum Security was the horse that ended up crossing the line first, but after a post-race objection was made about interference on the racetrack, a long, 20-minute video review commenced. The decision ended up being a disqualification for Maximum Security, which meant that the place horse, Country House, was declared the winner of the race.
Country House entered the race at 65-1 odds to win, making it the second-longest odds for a horse to win the race in the history of the event. Code of Honor moved up to place following the post-review results, and Tacitus finished in show. Improbable finished in fourth after entering as the one of the favorites alongside Maximum Security.
The 2019 Preakness Steaks will take place on Saturday, May 18 at Pimlico Race course in Baltimore, Maryland. Following the first-ever overturned finish at the Kentucky Derby, the second race of the Triple Crown will certainly be intriguing.
