The Bills-Panthers connections run deep

We all know the Buffalo Bills have plenty of connection to the Carolina Panthers.

From general manager Brandon Beane, who began his career there and rose through the ranks, to head coach Sean McDermott, who spent six seasons as the team’s defensive coordinator, to players like safety Kurt Coleman and cornerback Captain Munnerlyn, who were both recently signed by the Bills.

But what about Panthers with Bills connections?

Here’s a rundown of some interesting ways coaches and players for both teams have a connection to one another, courtesy of Buffalo Bills PR and Panthers.com:

 

Current Bills connections to the Panthers:

  • General manager Brandon Beane spent 19 years with the Panthers organization, finishing his stint with two seasons as the team’s assistant general manager (2015-16).
  • Head coach Sean McDermott was the defensive coordinator for six seasons in Carolina (2011-2016).
  • Special teams coordinator Heath Farwell spent a year as the assistant special teams coach with the Panthers (2018).
  • Safeties coach Bobby Babich started in the NFL by working on the Panthers’ coaching staff from 2011-12.
  • Quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey is in his first season as the Bills' quarterbacks coach after holding the same position for the Panthers from 2013-17. Dorsey also served as a pro scout for the Panthers during the 2011-12 seasons.
  • Defensive assistant Jim Salgado previously worked with McDermott during an internship with the Panthers.
  • Assistant to the head coach Matt Worswick spent the 2014-16 seasons with the Panthers.
  • Assistant general manager Joe Schoen worked with the Panthers from 2001-2007.
  • Director of player personnel Dan Morgan was the 11th pick in the 2001 NFL Draft by Carolina and started in 59 games in seven seasons with the Panthers.
  • Linebacker Lorenzo Alexander started his career as an undrafted free agent with the Panthers in 2005.
  • Defensive tackle Star Lotulelei played five seasons with the Panthers (2013- 17).
  • Safety Dean Marlowe spent the 2015 and 2016 seasons with the Panthers.
  • Safety Kurt Coleman played with the Panthers from 2015-2017.
  • Cornerback Captain Munnerlyn was drafted by the Panthers in 2009 and played there until 2013. He rejoined the team during the 2017-2018 seasons.

 

Current Panthers connections to the Bills:
  • Cornerback Kevon Seymour was acquired in a trade with the Bills at the end of the 2017 preseason.
  • Wide receiver Chris Hogan played for the Bills from 2012-15.
  • Cornerback Ross Cockrell was drafted by Buffalo in 2014 and played one season with the Bills.
  • Panthers assistant director of pro personnel Rob Hanrahan worked 16 seasons with the Bills, including two (2015-16) as the team’s director of pro personnel.
  • Assistant equipment manager Don Toner worked for the Bills for nine seasons before joining the Panthers in 1995.
