CAPACCIO: 2019 NFL Mock Draft No. 2

Let me be upfront and clear about this mock draft. I changed the top pick for the sake of it possibly happening. Even though I still believe, as of right now, that the Arizona Cardinals will take Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray first overall, that certainly isn't a lock, and the exercise of them not doing it needs to be done. So here it is. Murray stays on the board and the Cardinals go defense with the top overall choice. That has a domino effect on all of the other quarterbacks, then the entire rest of the first round.

This offseason has been all about adding weapons for second-year quarterback Josh Allen, and the Bills just continue to do that with the wideout who had scouts and fans in awe with his workout at the NFL Combine. Metcalf isn’t just a workout warrior. He’s a freakish athlete with the size, speed, and strength to be a true No. 1 NFL wide receiver. He probably won’t be that from Day 1, but the Bills made enough moves at the position this offseason that he won’t have to right away, which is fine because Metcalf is still raw in many ways. So, he could work on the finer points of playing the position at the next level while still contributing in certain situations and, hopefully, making some big plays. However, he will eventually be counted on to be the team’s go-to, No. 1 wide receiver for many years.

Surprise! Even after signing 13 new offensive players and only four on defense, the Bills stay on that side of the ball again with their second pick, and another pass catcher for Allen. This time, it’s a tight end, a position many consider the Bills’ No. 1 need heading into the draft. Even though Iowa’s Hockenson and Fant are both still on the board when the Bills are on the clock at ninth overall, they passed and went with Metcalf, but were still able to get the consensus No. 3 tight end in Round 2 in Smith, Jr., who is athletic and fast and can stretch the field down the seam. Smith isn’t a great blocker, bur he can hold his own. He needs some more consistence in that area, but he’s well-rounded, has good hands, and is a fierce competitor. His personality is very suited to what Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane are looking for in players, and his game is perfect for what Allen and the offense could use to completely overhaul it.
