Three cornerbacks who could fit the Bills at pick No. 54

The Buffalo Bills have a luxury right now heading into next week's NFL Draft. General manager Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott have built the roster strong enough for the next few years that there aren't a lot of immediate needs to address through the draft.

At cornerback, the Bills might have the best in the game with Tre'Davious White on the outside. The opposite side of White, however, could see some improvements.

Buffalo re-signed Levi Wallace to a one-year deal, and reunited McDermott with his CB1 from his days with the Carolina Panthers by signing Josh Norman to a one-year deal. Both could be just fine as a second starter who doesn't need to ever worry about covering an offense's best player thanks to White. But both saw their struggles in 2019. Norman's play, specifically, has declined each year, and by rapid descent since he left the Panthers for the Washington Redskins.

It is a starting spot that could certainly be upgraded. There are many intriguing options that could be available when the Bills are on the clock at 54th overall in the second round.

  • A.J. Terrell - CB - Clemson

If a team is looking for a cornerback with a very high ceiling, impressive speed and athleticism, ball skills, a player that is going to thrive in man coverage, Clemson's A.J. Terrell might be their guy.

The Bills wouldn't necessarily need Terrell to start from Day 1, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him instantly become the second-best coverage cornerback on the team.

In three years at Clemson, Terrell only allowed one game of 60-plus receiving yards against him. It was against the LSU Tigers and a 2021 first round wide receiver Jamar Chase in the 2020 National Championship. If you re-watch that game, Terrell's coverage on a lot of those receptions was as good as it can be. It just so happened that LSU quarterback, and expected first overall pick Joe Burrow put the passes where his wide receiver and only his wide receiver could get it.

Need more tape of Terrell against the best receivers college had to offer? Go back to the 2019 National Championship and watch the show he put on against three Alabama receivers that will be first round picks this year and next year.

In coverage schemes that often left him on an island (Cover 0 and Cover 1 specifically), Terrell had the fourth-highest coverage grade over the past two seasons. Ahead of potential first round picks like LSU cornerback Kristian Fulton, Florida cornerback C.J. Henderson, and TCU cornerback Jeff Gladney.

Terrell is seen, by many, as a potential first round selection, so he may not be available when Buffalo is on the clock. However, there are a number of corners that could go ahead of him, thus pushing him down the board.

  • Trevon Diggs - CB - Alabama

Could the Diggs brothers re-unite in Buffalo?

The Bills already traded for wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Perhaps now they could draft his younger brother and Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs in next week's draft.

The physical tools are all there. Diggs has good size at 6-foot-2, 207 pounds, and a crazy wingspan. He is also one of the faster corners in the draft. Diggs was recruited to Alabama partially as a wide receiver and it shows on tape. If he can force a turnover and get the ball, he is a threat to take it to the house every time.

Like Terrell, Diggs was often asked to go man-on-man, on an island, with some of the best receivers in college football.

According to Pro Football Focus, Diggs had the second-highest coverage grade among corners with at least 50 targets in single coverage over the last two seasons. He only allowed 20 receptions on 62 targets (32.3% completion percentage) for 273 yards and four touchdowns. He also recorded three interceptions, 18 forced incompletions, and just a 48.7 passer rating when targeted in single coverage.

Over four years at Alabama, Diggs never gave up 22-plus receptions in a single season.

He is still very new to the cornerback position and is a bit raw because of it. If a team can be patient and give Diggs time to develop, he could turn into a star.

The Bills might be the perfect fit with the way their secondary is currently constructed.

  • Damon Arnette - CB - Ohio State

Arnette gets overlooked, at times, because his teammate and fellow cornerback Jeffery Okudah is likely a top-three pick in the draft. Don't let that fool you. He is going to be a second round pick, at the latest.

In fact, Okudah playing opposite Arnette gave us a lot of opportunities to see him being tested by opposing offenses. The results were pretty good.

Arnette is an aggressive, explosive cornerback with the ability to click and close (read a play and attack quickly) really well. He isn't the biggest cornerback, weighing in under 200 pounds. He isn't the tallest either at just 6-foot tall. However, his toughness makes up for that. Toughness might be the most impressive part of Arnette's game. In 2019, he payed the entire season with a broken wrist. He embraces contact and loves to hit.

There were immaturity concerns in his first few seasons at Ohio State, but both coaches and players say Arnette grew tremendously in that area on and off the field in his final seasons with the Buckeyes.
