The PGA’s first major of 2021 is upon us with 88 of the world’s top golfers headed to the Peach State for the Masters Tournament at Augusta National later this week. Last year’s event, held in November for the first time due to COVID, was won by World No. 1 Dustin Johnson, who carded a Masters record -20 en route to his first green jacket and second career major. Johnson, who withdrew from last week’s Valero Texas Open (won by Jordan Spieth) to prepare for Augusta, will begin his title defense Thursday at 10:30 AM alongside Lee Westwood and first-time Masters participant Tyler Strafaci, the latter one of three amateurs competing this week.
Three-time winner Phil Mickelson (2004, 2006 and 2010) is among 18 past champions in this year’s field. Mickelson, who tied for 55th at Augusta last fall, recently fell out of the Top 100 World Rankings for the first time since 1993. Tommy Fleetwood and Scottie Scheffler will join Lefty for Thursday’s opening round with those three getting started at 1:12 PM.
Brooks Koepka, whose best finish at Augusta came two years ago when he was runner-up to Tiger Woods (obviously, Woods will not be present for this year’s tournament while recovering from injuries sustained in a recent car accident), will attempt to play despite undergoing knee surgery less than three weeks ago. His group tees off at 10:06.
Arguably the most-talked-about player on tour, Bryson DeChambeau, will be looking for redemption after a disappointing 34th-place finish last fall. The 27-year-old admitted he was under the weather, though he’s never finished better than 21st at Augusta. Despite his underwhelming track record at the Masters, DeChambeau is the co-favorite to win, sharing +950 odds with Johnson on FanDuel Sportsbook.
Golfers can expect clear skies with temperatures touching 80 for Thursday’s opening round at the Par-72 Augusta National. Tee times for all 30 groups are listed below.
