Bears' Tarik Cohen: 'I've Got To Ball Out This Year'

Cohen admitted he wasn't himself in 2019 after dealing with a personal matter in his life.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (670 The Score) -- A year ago at this time, Bears running back Tarik Cohen was in a different place emotionally.

Cohen was coming off an offseason that was struck by tragedy and now admits he didn't have his usual drive leading into the 2019 campaign. Cohen then averaged career-low marks with 3.3 yards per rushing attempt and 4.4 yards per touch. By the end of the season, Cohen felt his body deteriorating.

As he has in the past, Cohen on Tuesday declined to discuss the personal tragedy, only mentioning it affected him throughout the season.

"I didn't feel the same explosion that I would usually feel, the same speed, and the same fire," Cohen said Tuesday.

Now, the 25-year-old Cohen has a renewed drive entering a critical year. It's a contract season for him, and the Bears are looking to respond from a disappointing 8-8 mark last year.

Cohen is poised to play a key role for the Bears, serving as the backup at running back behind starter David Montgomery and as a key versatile weapon in coach Matt Nagy's offense.

In 2020, Cohen wants to be part of why the Bears win and also earn a lucrative second contract.

"Ultimately, I know it's on me to perform well this year," Cohen said. "So, I'm taking all things considered, I've got to ball out this year. It's always on me."
