Bill Belichick gives terse response to question about confidence in Hoyer, Zappe

Mac Jones has a high-ankle sprain, which could result in the New England Patriots turning to one of their backup quarterbacks for the foreseeable future.

Bill Belichick was in no mood to talk about either player Monday morning.

Jones potentially could be heading to IR, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, after getting injured in Sunday’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The Patriots’ two in-house options are Brian Hoyer and Bailey Zappe, while the list of free agents, headlined by ex-Pat Cam Newton, is uninspiring.

Asked Monday during his weekly appearance on “The Greg Hill Show” about his confidence in Hoyer and Zappe, Belichick didn’t really expound.

“I’m confident in all the players on the roster," Belichick said. "That’s why they’re on the roster.”

Belichick didn’t give much of an update Monday on Jones, so his short response could potentially be connected to not wanting to hint that they’d need turn to one of those players soon.

Should it reach that point though, Hoyer is the likeliest option. He’s been around the team for years as the backup, and Zappe, a fourth-round pick this season, has yet to be active for a game this season.
