Training camp signals the official start of football season with fans of all 32 NFL teams getting a fresh start for the new season.
However, for the Dallas Cowboys, they could be without a key piece on the offensive line in Zack Martin.
Martin, the Cowboys’ first-round pick in 2014, is considering not reporting to training camp due to his contract situation.
Bobby Belt and Bryan Broaddus of the Audacy Original Podcast “Love of the Star” gave their thoughts on when the Martin situation could be resolved.
“My sense talking to folks over the last week or so is that I don’t think this is bitter. I don’t think anybody’s bitter right now,” Belt said (15:00 in player above). “In fact, I think there’s optimism from Zack Martin’s camp, there’s optimism from the Cowboys’ side, ‘Hey, we’re going to figure this out.’ It’s going to get resolved…
“I would be surprised if he’s not back with this settled by the time we leave Oxnard on August 4th,” Belt continued. “I’m not ruling out the possibility that I could be wrong, but my sense just from talking to everybody is the folks I’ve spoken with have said it would be a surprise if they didn’t figure this out in the next few weeks.”
“I agree,” Broaddus replied. “I just don’t think there’s a lot of hostility going on right now. This is something that was brought up when the combine was rolling around.”
The fact that this is something that has been going on behind the scenes for months without much negativity on either side is encouraging. It also sparked a theory from Belt.
“My sense is that this is Zack Martin trying to give them a little bit of a kick in the pants like ‘Come on, guys. Let’s get this done,’” Belt said. “We’re just going to publicly put this out there now … this is your nudge to remind you we got to get this done.”
Belt went as far as to say that the Cowboys would probably be happy to get this finished before the Joneses meet with the media on Tuesday, although that’d be a pretty quick turnaround. Nevertheless, you can expect Martin in Cowboys camp before long.
