Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR 550) - Injuries continue to pile up for the Buffalo Bills defense on Sunday, which included a depth piece of the secondary needing to be taken off the field in an ambulance.
Late in the second quarter with the New York Jets driving and facing a 4th-and-2 at midfield, quarterback Zach Wilson completed a short pass to running back Breece Hall, who had some open space for a 15-yard gain and a first down.
On the tackle, Bills depth safety Taylor Rapp made the tackle of Hall with cornerback Taron Johnson trailing behind. However, Rapp took the brunt of the tackle in his head and neck area, and ended up falling back to the turf after originally getting up from the play.
Rapp and Johnson both remained down on the field for some time after the play. Johnson was able to get back to his feet and run off the field to be evaluated for a head injury. He ended up being ruled out of the game in the second half with a concussion.
However, Rapp remained down along the Buffalo sideline until an ambulance strolled out on the field to take the 25-year-old away. The good news is Rapp was seen giving a thumbs up to the crowd just before he was loaded into the ambulance.
During his postgame press conference on Sunday, Bills head coach Sean McDermott provided a positive update on Rapp, saying he did not need medical attention at the hospital, and that he was believed to be at home resting.
While Rapp has primarily been utilized as a special teams player in his first season with the Bills, he has gotten some key depth snaps at safety in the absence of Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer throughout the season. Through his first 10 games with the Bills this year, Rapp has started two games, picking up 25 total tackles, a quarterback hit and a fumble recovery.
Rapp was signed as a free agent this offseason after spending the first four years of his career with the Los Angeles Rams.
This is the second time this season a Bills player has been taken off the field at Highmark Stadium in an ambulance. Running back Damien Harris was also taken off the field in an ambulance in a Week 6 win over the New York Giants.
