Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - With ankle and foot injuries for punter Cameron Johnston forcing him out of the lineup for some time, the Buffalo Bills have signed veteran punter Mitch Wishnowsky to the active roster.
A former fourth-round pick out of the University of Utah in 2019, Wishnowsky had spent the first six years of his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers. In his 92 career games, Wishnowsky averaged 45.6 yards per-punt and pinned opponents inside their 20-yard line 138 times.
The 33-year-old's best season punting the football came in 2023 when he averaged 47.7 yards per-punt, while pinning the opponent inside its red zone 26 times.
The native of Australia went unsigned through the offseason and training camp before signing on the Washington Commanders' practice squad, where he was released three days later.
To make room for Wishnowsky on the roster, the Bills have placed Johnston on Injured Reserve, which means he will miss, at least, four weeks of action.
Johnston was injured in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 31-19 win over the New Orleans Saints at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park. The 32-year-old was rolled up on after booting a punt that resulted in a roughing the kicker penalty against the Saints and an automatic first down for the Bills.
In his three games this season with the Bills, Johnston had punted seven times, averaging 44 yards per-punt and pinning the opponent inside their 20-yard line twice.
