Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The Bills defense was a real difference maker in Buffalo's 26-7 win over the Steelers on Sunday at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh.
One of the main pieces to Buffalo's defensive success on Sunday was cornerback Christian Benford, who registered two tackles, a tackle for loss, an interception and a fumble recovery for a touchdown on the first play of the third quarter.
With that performance, Benford was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
The touchdown helped completely turn the tide for the Bills in their win, as Buffalo was trailing the Steelers, 7-3, at halftime and looked like a touchdown was difficult to come by. After defensive end Joey Bosa managed to strip-sack Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Benford picked up the football and returned it 17 yards for the score.
Then on the very next drive with Mason Rudolph under center for a series, Benford was in the right spot at the right time, reeling in an interception on an overthrown ball down the sideline.
Benford is the first Bills defender to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors since last season when Buffalo had cornerback Taron Johnson (Week 10) and linebacker Terrel Bernard (Week 11) get league recognition in back-to-back weeks.
The Bills have had a pair of offensive weapons earn Offensive Player of the Week honors this season, as quarterback Josh Allen earned it in Weeks 1 and 11, and running back James Cook earned it back in Week 8.
