Pittsford, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson suffered an apparent lower right leg injury Saturday at training camp, and was eventually taken by a cart from the field to the locker room for further testing.

According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, initial tests show Gardner-Johnson has a lower calf strain.

Johnson went down without contact and, as athletic trainers came out to tend to him, was grabbing at his right calf area near his ankle and Achilles.

He eventually got up, bounced on his feet a couple of times, but could not put any pressure on his right leg as he walked off the field.

With assistance from athletic trainers, he made his way to the medical tent area, but eventually walked to a cart where he was taken into the locker room.

After practice, left tackle Dion Dawkins, who was one of the first players to get to Gardner-Johnson while he was on the ground, told reporters he got word from coaches that Gardner-Johnson was "OK."

General manager and president of football operations Brandon Beane, even after told by reporters what Dawkins had to say, said he had no idea the status of Gardner-Johnson, and would not until further tests were done.

The Bills signed Gardner-Johnson to a one-year, $3.5 million free agent contract this offseason that can be worth up to $6 million with incentives. He is expected to be a starting safety next to Cole Bishop.

If Gardner-Johsnon is out for any length of time, veterans Damar Hamlin and Geno Stone would most likely compete for the starting spot. However, rookie Jalon Kilgore has been impressive so far at training camp and could have a bigger role and even compete for that spot.
