Buffalo Bills tight end Dawson Knox is in the midst of an early breakout 2021 campaign, and his success is due to comfort.
During an interview with the “Howard and Jeremy Show" on Thursday, the third-year pass-catcher revealed why he’s thriving so far this season.
“I’d say being in Year 3 in the same system with [offensive coordinator Brian[ Daboll and Josh [Allen], it starts to slow down a little bit,” Knox said with Howard Simon and Jeremy White. “I don’t ever want to feel like I’ve gotten too comfortable. But I’d say it’s gotten to the point where I can just play fast, and we’ve got some awesome coaches and game plans. Once you establish yourself in the same system, you can start being better at the little things.”
Knox’s numbers are impressive through the first four games of the season. The 24-year-old has caught 15 passes - which is already nine receptions shy of his 2020 total - for 144 yards and four touchdowns. Knox finished with just three touchdown receptions last season.
His best performance came last week against the Houston Texans, in which he reeled in five catches for 37 yards and two scores. The Bills’ star-studded receiving corps rightfully garners a lot of the attention, but Knox is developing into a real red zone threat.
He’ll need to be at his best against the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday night at Arrowhead Stadium. While the Bills are trying to view it as just another game, Knox acknowledged they’re a little amped for this one.
“We definitely have a chip on our shoulder with this one,” he said. “But at the same time, it is just the next game. When you start overanalyzing and overthinking and getting too tight, is the moment you start not being able to play loose and fast. It’s still early in the season.”
With the top-ranked scoring offense and defense, the Bills couldn’t be entering Kansas City in a better place. Let the AFC Championship rematch commence.
“We just always have the mentality of, if we just focus on doing the simple things better, and focus on us being as good as we can be, everything will take care of itself,” Knox said. “It’s not as much as who lines up against us, but it’s what we’re doing right, and just doing our one job, and we’ll think we’ll get the results we want.
“We have a lot of confidence.”
