If Titans are forced to forfeit, Bills players will also not get paid

The Bills-Titans matchup has been moved to Tuesday pending no more COVID-19 cases in Tennessee

The Tennessee Titans' COVID-19 outbreak may give the Buffalo Bills a victory, but it would also cost them some money.

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, if the Titans must forfeit their Week 5 matchup against the Bills, players on both teams would forfeit a game check and not be paid for the week.

The NFL officially made the decision to move the game this Sunday to Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET, contingent on no more positive COVID-19 tests to surface from the Titans. In addition, the Bills' Thursday Night Football game next week against the Kansas City Chiefs has been moved to some point "later in the weekend."

If there are more positive cases in Tennessee at any point heading into the weekend, then it's likely the Bills-Titans matchup would not happen. And if the Titans are forced to forfeit the game, forfeiting game checks for the team not in violation would likely not sit well with Bills players.

Per Mortensen, it has become a hot-button topic among players and roster sizes, Injured Reserve modifications and game-day activities were designed in order to avoid this scenario.

The NFL sent a memo to teams earlier this week warning teams that they could be penalized with forfeitures. Players will still receive signing bonuses and roster bonuses, but will not be able to collect "Guaranteed Salary" for canceled games in 2020, which was outlined in an Aug. 3 letter from the NFL to NFLA on canceled games.

But the Bills, who have not done anything wrong, would also be getting punished under those rules despite being given a win.
