McDermott remembers Allen-Diggs combo as 'high level'

Bills head coach Sean McDermott joined the "Extra Point Show" on Friday ahead of their matchup with the Patriots this Sunday night

Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The Buffalo Bills are off to their best start to a season since 2020, and sit atop AFC standings ahead of their "Sunday Night Football" showdown with the New England Patriots at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park.

With a win on Sunday, the Bills will start a year 5-0 for the first time since the 1991 season, where Buffalo went on to eventually make their second of four-straight Super Bowl appearances.

And in the modern Super Bowl era, no Bills team has ever started a season 6-0.

With the Patriots, they currently sit second in the AFC East with a 2-2 record after a 42-13 blowout victory over the Carolina Panthers this past Sunday at Foxboro.

This game Sunday night will be a homecoming for a pair of familiar faces in New England to quarterback Josh Allen and the wide receivers room. Stefon Diggs is back in Buffalo for the first time since a trade to the Houston Texans team following the 2023 season, while Mack Hollins is also back after a stellar season with the Bills last year.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott looks back fondly of Diggs' time in Buffalo, as he was a huge piece that helped Allen ascend into the top tier of quarterbacks in the National Football League.

"The combination of Josh and 'Stef' was high level," said McDermott during his weekly appearance on the "Extra Point Show" on WGR. "When you when you bring in a player like that, they really raise the standard, in terms of the level that you compete at practice, and the level that you play at on game day."

As for Hollins, McDermott admits it was hard to see Hollins leave the Bills this past offseason after such a productive year that helped Allen earn Most Valuable Player honors.

"It's not an easy part of the business, but it is the business. I'm happy for Mack and his family. He's a really, really good football player," McDermott said with Sal Capaccio.

Injuries continue to be a hinderance for the Bills defensively in the early parts of the season, but there could be some good news on the way with the potential return of linebacker Matt Milano (pec) and defensive tackle Ed Oliver (ankle). Both those players, along with offensive tackle Spencer Brown (calf) are set to practice on Friday.

However, McDermott did confirm a pair of other defenders that will not be available for the Bills come Sunday night.

"Dorian Strong and Dorian Williams will not practice today. They'll both be out," he said. "T.J. Sanders will not practice today. We'll take it one day at a time with him as we head down the stretch here."

Kickoff this Sunday is slated for 8:20 p.m. in Orchard Park, and can be heard on the official voice of the Bills - WGR Sports Radio 550.
