McDermott felt Bills fought hard to stay in first preseason game

Bills head coach Sean McDermott addressed the media following his team's 34-25 preseason loss to the Giants

Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The Buffalo Bills fell short in their opening preseason game of the 2025 season, falling the New York Giants, 34-25, at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park.

For many players, Saturday was their first action at the NFL level. Bills head coach Sean McDermott was happy with the way his team banded together to keep the game a tight contest until the wanning moments.

"Thought the guys fought hard to stay in the game at times, and then mount a comeback at the end there. Really appreciate that," said McDermott following the loss. "That said, there's a lot we can take from this game, both young and old, and coaches and players. That's really where you start with it. You go and look at the film, and there'll be a lot to go through tomorrow when we get together."

Meanwhile, we saw the latest development surrounding the James Cook situation unfold Saturday with the running back dressing and taking part in warmups, but not playing a snap for the Bills' first-team offense. Cook has been a non-participant at training camp since earlier this week when he commenced a "hold-in" as an attempt to get his contract situation resolved with the team.

"James and I had a good conversation yesterday. We talked about warming up. He agreed to warm up, but not play due to his situation right now. So that's where we're at," McDermott explained. "We can talk about the guys who played. I think that's the right thing to do, and the fair thing to do right now. James' situation is James' situation. Let's talk about the team."
