McDermott: 'Not the performance we were looking for'

Bills head coach Sean McDermott addressed the media following his team's first lost of the season to the Patriots

Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The Buffalo Bills' undefeated run to start the 2025 season came to an end during Sunday night's divisional matchup against the New England Patriots, 23-20, at Highmark Stadium.

Following the first loss of the season, Bills head coach Sean McDermott was very candid about the team's struggles against New England.

"That's not the performance we were looking for. I thought we beat ourselves, as we turned the ball over three times," said McDermott with the media after the game. "They get 10 points. We get one takeaway. Don't get any points off it. Just not enough complimentary football. We didn't seem like we were into a rhythm offensively enough, and when we did, we had penalties, self-inflicted wounds early on in the game. We've got to learn from this."

Turnovers were detrimental for the Bills in their first loss of the year, with two of them coming from quarterback Josh Allen. While a first-quarter fumble came on an exchange with tight end Dawson Knox, his second turnover came on a third-quarter interception inside the red zone.

"These are things we have to learn from, and it's got to start with the fundamentals," McDermott said. "You cannot turn the ball over and expect to win. You got to take care of the football."
