Miami, Fla. (WGR 550) - The Buffalo Bills traveled to South Florida on Sunday to take on their division rival Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium.
Both teams came into the Week 3 matchup undefeated, locking them in a tie atop the AFC East standings. In the end, it was the Dolphins emerging on top of a heated battle, winning 21-19 in the scorching heat of Miami.
One of the hardest parts of Sunday's game for both teams proved to be the scorching Florida heat. In a game that saw many players either leave the game from heat illness or be sidelined for good portions of it, Bills head coach Sean McDermott loved how his team showed resilience throughout the afternoon.
"I thought our training staff did a great job. Guys were going down, some of it heat related, some of it other injury related. Just real proud of the guys," said McDermott with the media following the loss. "I know we didn't get the result that we all came down here for. I think we learned something about our team today, that's for sure. I'm proud of the guys and the way they battled and the effort they gave us."
Aside from the issues the team had with the heat, McDermott emphasized that this game was a good learning experience to see what this team is capable of, even when they find themselves down.
"I think execution, overall, we had the situation before half we were trying to kill the clock and take it down to about four seconds, which is what we normally do," McDermott said. "We got the ball down inside the one-yard line again and didn't execute there. So just things we can learn and grow from."
One of the things that the Bills discovered on Sunday was how willing the team is to step up for each other when they're needed. McDermott noted the pride that players showed, as their teammates needed them to step up.
"I think we'll learn things that were really good about today, one of those is the guts and heart and the intangibles of our football team," McDermott said. "I like the way we fought in all three phases right to the end, and we've gotta learn from it."
