NFL moves touchbacks to 35-yard line, tables vote on ‘Tush Push’
A number of new rules were announced at NFL league meetings
Palm Beach, Fla. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - One year after moving touchbacks after kickoffs to the 30-yard line, the NFL has made another dramatic change, moving the start line after touchbacks even further to the 35-yard line.
That rule, as well as several other rules, bylaws, and resolutions that passed were announced on Tuesday at the annual league meetings in South Florida.
There were also several proposals that were either voted down, or tabled for further discussion, including the commonly referred to "Tush Push" play, where a player pushes a quarterback forward after a snap.
Competition committee coach chair Rich McKay said the play and proposal was discussed for 30-to-40 minutes.
"A lot of teams had a lot of views," he said.
Another rule that passed was the expansion of replay assist. Next season, replay assist can call down to officials to have them pick up a flag that was thrown for hitting a defenseless player, face mask, horse collar, tripping, and rough/running into the kicker when there is clear and obvious video evidence that foul didn't occur.
This rule change does not allow replay assist to call a penalty that was not called on the field.
Here's a summary of rules, bylaws, and proposals that were passed:
