Brandon Marsh has gotten to play with some pretty good players in his young MLB career. The Phillies outfielder is now teammates with Bryce Harper after playing 163 games in Los Angeles with Angels stars Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani.
The 25-year-old outfielder is off to a great start this season and he’s having fun while doing it.
Marsh talked about what it’s like to play with guys like Harper, Trout, and Ohtani on the Audacy Original Podcast “Baseball Isn’t Boring”.
“Being able to be in the outfield with Mike Trout and being able to play on the same squad as Bryce, and I’m looking forward to being able to play in the outfield with him, too,” Marsh said (6:35 in player above). “Moments like that where I’m sitting in the outfield – the game’s going a little slow, maybe a pitching change or something – I just look around and I see guys like that over to my left or right and it’s like ‘Damn.’ I look up to those guys so I’m just super blessed to be able to have the opportunity that I have. I’m trying to ride it out and have as much fun as possible.”
Harper and Trout both debuted in 2012 and they haven’t looked back. They each won the Rookie of the Year award in their respective leagues in that season and both players have multiple MVP awards in their trophy case.
The superstars are obviously talented, but it’s their work ethic that sets them apart.
“Their work ethic – you can’t compete with that. They prepare better than anyone and the stuff they do off the field before the game, the preparation, the routine, it’s down to a T. They are who they are because of it,” Marsh said. “It’s super incredible to watch. It’s like a video game, really. It’s super impressive…
“I feel whenever I’m here watching Bryce hit, or back when I was with the Angels watching Trout, Shohei, Rendon hit and all that, I was just in awe. I still see myself in awe watching those guys compete up in the box, get down to two strikes, take a deep breath, go in, and battle it out. It’s super cool. It’s impressive and it’s something that I try to take and implement into my game a little bit.”
Two of the best baseball players in the world having such an arduous pregame routine shows that work ethic is important for everyone, perhaps even more so for those expected to be at the top of their sport.
“You always got to work. Talent only gets you so far, even for them. They have to work just as hard if not harder than us to stay at the top. It’s incredible to watch,” Marsh said. “Day in and day out, no matter who’s on the bump they’re going to put up four or five good at-bats every day and it’s going to be special to watch.”
Marsh is carving out a nice role for himself in centerfield for the Phillies. He’s batting .314 with a .980 OPS through 102 at-bats this season.
