Sports agent Casey Close is under the microscope after Freddie Freeman recently cut ties with his representation at Excel Sports, and Fox Sports radio host Doug Gottlieb reporting afterward that the Dodgers first baseman fired Close because he never told Freeman about a final contract offer from the Braves.

Freeman just completed his first series back in Atlanta, the only city he ever knew as a major leaguer, and where he won a World Series in 2021. Freeman was visibly emotional in his return, and when asked about Gottlieb’s report, he declined to comment.

Close did not decline, submitting a statement to Sports Illustrated that there was “no truth” to the report, and he would “testify to that under oath.” Close then submitted another statement via Excel Sports on Wednesday, reaffirming that the report was false, and that the Braves had “fostered” a “negative” narrative about the negotiations since before the season began.

Shortly after, Close got a notable endorsement from one of his most famous clients ever in Derek Jeter.

“I have known Casey since I was 18,” Jeter tweeted. “Over the last 30 years, we have had our share of differences of opinion, but to this day, he remains a trusted advisor and friend. He is a man who values morals, integrity and above all else honesty and transparency.”

Many expected Freeman to return to Atlanta this offseason, but in a surprise move, the Braves traded for Matt Olson and promptly signed him to a $168 million extension, while Freeman signed with the Dodgers less than a week later.
