Pete Alonso is coming back to defend his title.
The Mets slugger announced his commitment to the 2021 Home Run Derby in an Instagram post showing highlights from his 2019 victory, only with a polar bear head edited over his face. With All-Star festivities being canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Alonso still is the reigning champion, winning two years ago in his historic rookie season.
Alonso joins Shohei Ohtani as the commits for this year’s Derby. He took down Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the championship round in Cleveland in 2019, which would be an anticipated rematch if Guerrero, this year’s current home run leader, decides to enter the event.
Alonso has 11 home runs on the season and is slugging .451 in 204 at-bats.
