DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Dallas Cowboys released defensive tackle Gerald McCoy on Tuesday, following a season-ending injury he suffered in a Monday practice, as first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Cowboys released DT Gerald McCoy via injury waiver on quad, per source.

Following the release, sources told 105.3 The Fan's Mike Fisher that, thanks to an injury waiver previously built in his contract, the Cowboys were in fact already protected should this exact situation have occurred.

Due to this clause in the deal, the Cowboys were free to release him without penalty,  and while McCoy will keep the $3 million bonus that he received upon his signing, he will not be owed the $2.5 million that was previously "guaranteed'' in his contact.

However, this may not be the end of McCoy with the Cowboys, as sources also indicated to Fisher that: 'There is definitely mutual interest in (McCoy) being with the Cowboys in 2021.''

Either way, the Cowboys will have to look for a new answer at the center of their defensive line before the season opener against the Rams on September 13th.
