The Toronto Blue Jays played their home games at Sahlen Field in Buffalo in 2020, which was made easy by the Buffalo Bisons’ Triple-A season being canceled.
For the Blue Jays to play their home games in Buffalo again in 2021, one thing had to be figured out. Where do the Bisons play?
Now we have that answer: Trenton, New Jersey.
The Bisons confirmed the news on Friday, as they will play their home games for the 2021 season at Arm and Hammer Park. The team's "home opener" is scheduled for Tuesday, May 4 against the Worcester Red Sox.
“After a nearly decade-long partnership with the Toronto Blue Jays, these Sahlen Field upgrades are a natural progression of our successful partnership. Sahlen Field is one of the oldest ballparks in all of Triple-A so these upgrades are essential for the long-term success of having high-quality baseball in Buffalo, NY for many years to come,” said President of Rich Baseball Operations, Mike Buczkowski in a team statement on Friday. “We thank the Trenton Thunder organization for opening their doors and welcoming the Bisons so this renovation can be completed.”
Trenton was the home for the New York Yankees’ Double-A affiliate until last year.
The Blue Jays are currently playing their home games in Dunedin, Florida, but will be out of there by the time the summer heat and rain rolls in.
The Bisons said Friday they are working with the Blue Jays on a joint renovation project to get Sahlen Field ready for MLB regular season games this year. However, no date has been officially set for the Blue Jays to start playing games in Downtown Buffalo.
The major difference between last year and this year is the potential for fans to attend games. New York State has allowed the New York Yankees and New York Mets to play their games with a 20% crowd.
The Bisons said that season ticket holders and fans with credits from the 2020 season will be contacted in the coming days with more details on the options available to them this season.
How cool will it be to to watch the Blue Jays play the Yankees or Boston Red Sox on a crisp summer night in Buffalo? It is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
