Pegula shocks top-ranked Swiatek to earn first career Major semifinal appearance

No. 6 ranked Jessica Pegula defeats the world No. 1 ranked Iga Swiatek in straight sets to advance at the U.S. Open

New York (WGR Sports Radio 550) - After falling in her first six career tennis Grand Slam quarterfinal matches, Jessica Pegula finally punched her ticket to a Major semifinal on home soil after knocking off the world's No. 1 ranked Iga Swiatek on Wednesday night, 6-2, 6-4.

After jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first set, Pegula held on for the 6-2 win.

After a back and forth affair to 3-3 in the second set, Pegula put her foot on the gas, taking two of the next three games to win the set, and therefore seal the victory.

Pegula was able to exact revenge on Swiatek after the latter had dispatched her in the quarterfinals en route to winning the 2022 U.S. Open title. Swiatek had also won the previous matchup between the two in the 2023 WTA Finals in Guadalajara, 6-1, 6-0.

Pegula trailed in the all-time series between the two, 6-3, entering Wednesday's match.

The 30-year-old Pegula now enters her maiden Major semifinal having won 14 of her last 15 matches, including a second-consecutive title in Canada and an appearance at the Cincinnati Open in the finals.

Pegula will make her semifinal debut Thursday against unseeded Karolina Muchová of Czechia at 8:15 p.m. ET.
