(94WIP/WGR 550) - The Philadelphia Eagles and Jalen Hurts have agreed to a new massive contract extension worth $255 million over five years, making the quarterback the highest paid player in NFL history, in terms of average annual value.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reports the deal includes about $180 million in guarantees and a no-trade clause, the first no-trade clause in Eagles history.

In terms of total amount of money, Hurts has the third-highest contract in the NFL.

Hurts, 24, was the Eagles' second-round pick in 2020, and had one year left on his rookie deal and was scheduled to make a base salary of just $4.3 million in 2023, per Spotrac.com. The Eagles, however, took care of him, extending him through 2028, which is six more total seasons.

In two full seasons as the Eagles' starting quarterback, Hurts has a regular season record of 22-8 with 38 passing touchdowns and 23 rushing touchdowns.

Hurts broke out during the 2022 campaign, going 14-1 while throwing for 3,701 yards, 22 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He also rushed for another 760 yards and 13 touchdowns, earning him his first Pro Bowl and All-Pro (second-team) honors.

Hurts is 2-2 in four postseason games with four passing touchdowns, two interceptions, one fumble, and five rushing touchdowns. This includes his impressive Super Bowl debut, where he accounted for 374 total yards and four total touchdowns in a 38-35 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII.

Howie Roseman and the Eagles were busy during the free agency period, re-signing cornerbacks James Bradberry and Darius Slay, plus bringing back veterans like running back Boston Scott, defensive end Brandon Graham, center Jason Kelce, and defensive tackle Fletcher Cox on one-year deals.

Contrarily, the Eagles lost some key players like defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, linebacker T.J. Edwards, safety Marcus Epps, linebacker Kyzir White, tackle Andre Dillard, and guard Isaac Seumalo.

The Eagles added some new blood to offset some of their losses, signing free agent running back Rashaad Penny, backup quarterback Marcus Mariota, defensive tackle Kentavius Street, linebacker Nicholas Morrow, and safety Terrell Edmunds.

The Eagles also have picks No. 10 and No. 30 in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft later this month.
