The Giants have responded to a devastating injury by reportedly signing one of the top remaining free agents in the NFL.
The team has reached an agreement on a deal with former Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
The move comes just two days after superstar back Saquon Barkley was lost for the balance of the season due to a torn right ACL.
The 5-foot-8 Freeman was a third-round pick in 2014 by the Falcons coming out of Florida State, where he won a national title along with quarterback Jameis Winston.
Freeman strung together a pair of 1,000-yard seasons with Atlanta in 2015 and '16 -- when the team made it all the way to the Super Bowl before a heartbreaking loss to the Patriots -- but is seeking to reestablish himself after battling injuries and ineffectiveness the past couple years.
Freeman joins the Giants with 3,972 career rushing yards on 951 attempts, good for an average of 4.2 yards per carry. He has also been a factor in the passing game, hauling in 257 career passes for 2,015 yards, good for nearly 8 yards per catch.
The deal was pending a physical, Rapoport said.
