Isaiah Wilson’s career was already hanging by a thread. Wednesday’s news that Wilson was arrested at gunpoint following a high-speed chase in January could very well be the final nail in his NFL coffin.
According to Adam Sparks of the Nashville Tennesseean, Wilson and a female passenger were arrested January 7th on charges of felony fleeing from police, possession of a schedule 1 controlled substance, marijuana possession, drug-related paraphernalia, reckless driving, reckless conduct and speeding in a construction zone. While being pursued by Barrow County police in Georgia, Wilson’s Dodge Charger was clocked at 123 mph, though arresting officer Stephen Kinney believes he reached a maximum speed of 140.
Wilson, whose car was eventually discovered wrecked 100 yards off the road, said he evaded police over fear that he would go to jail, citing his past experiences with law enforcement. The 22-year-old insisted he wasn’t in possession of any illegal drugs, only for police to find 3.4 grams of marijuana and an additional 0.2 grams of LSD.
Selected 29th overall in last year’s draft, the 350-pound tackle played all of four snaps as a rookie, enduring two stints on the COVID list and later being suspended by the Titans for an unspecified violation of team rules. The University of Georgia alum was also arrested in Nashville on DUI charges last fall. According to the incident report, Wilson was doing “donuts” at an intersection before his vehicle struck a concrete wall.
“We put him on the reserve/non-football injury list and haven't spoken to him since,” Titans GM Jon Robinson revealed to ESPN last month. “We did a lot of work on him leading up to the draft. The player that was here in the fall was not the player we evaluated.”
Wilson was eventually traded to Miami in exchange for a seventh-round pick but was cut days later after blowing off multiple team meetings and posting a video of himself dancing shirtless and vaping on top of a car. It’s sad to see Wilson waste so much talent, losing his once-promising career in a blaze of self-destruction. Hopefully Wilson, who is clearly fighting his share of demons right now, can find the help he so desperately needs.
