Las Vegas, Nev. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - For the first time in 20 years, the Carolina Hurricanes storm their way through the NHL Playoffs and capture a Stanley Cup title.
The Hurricanes clinched their first Stanley Cup since 2006 after defeating the Vegas Golden Knights, 3-0, in Game 6 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final at T-Mobile Arena. After losing Games 1 and 3 of the series, Carolina then went on to win the series, 4-2, which included wins in the final three contests.

Carolina got the scoring started early in the first period of Game 6 when winger Taylor Hall got a step in-behind the Vegas defense and fired a shot through Golden Knights goalie Carter Hart. It was Hall's seventh goal of the playoffs and second goal of the Stanley Cup Final.
The Hurricanes extended their lead to 2-0 with about six-and-a-half minutes remaining in the second period when winger Jackson Blake was able to finish off a play that started with linemate Logan Stankoven taking the puck into the Vegas end and getting a couple quality scoring chances. The goal was Blake's second of the series and seventh of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Despite throwing 14 shots on goal in the opening 25 minutes of the game, the Golden Knights had no answer to solve Hurricanes goalie Brandon Bussi and the Carolina defense. Vegas was held to no shots on goal for nearly the final 15 minutes of the second period of play.
The Golden Knights hit desperation mode in the third period, trying to keep their hopes of forcing a Game 7 back in Raleigh alive. However, Bussi shut the door and capped off the Game 6 win by stopping all 22 shots he faced in the series-clinching victory.
Carolina put the cherry on top of its victory with just over a minute remaining in regulation when Nikolaj Ehlers scored into an empty net for his eighth goal of the playoffs.

Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal had a Stanley Cup Final to remember, resulting in him winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs. Staal tied an NHL record for goals scored in consecutive games to start the series, netting six goals in Games 1 through 5 after scoring just two goals in the first three series. Staal is also now the oldest player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy (37), and snapped a record 17-year span between Stanley Cup championships.
Staal first won the Stanley Cup as a 20-year-old with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009.

Blake ended up finishing the playoffs as the Hurricans' leading scorer with 20 points (7+13) in 19 games played, while Hall ended up with 19 points (7+12) in that same span. Leading the way in the goals department for Carolina in the playoffs was Stankoven, who netted 11 goals in 19 games.
As for Bussi, he came through in the clutch for the Hurricanes after taking over for a banged up Frederik Andersen in Game 3 of the series. While Bussi was credited with the loss in Game 3 - a 5-4 over loss in Vegas - he managed to string together three-straight wins while posting a 1.60 goals-against average, a .931 save percentage and his shutout.
Leading up to Game 3, Andersen had carried Carolina with his play in net, posting a 13-2 record in 16 games played with a 1.89 goals-against average, a .910 save percentage and three shutouts.

The Hurricanes made quick work of their opponents throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs, going 16-3 in their 19 games played. They started their postseason by sweeping both the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers in the first two rounds, followed by a five-game series win over the Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference Final and their six-game series win in the Final over the Golden Knights.
Hall is one of five players to win the Stanley Cup this year with past Sabres connections. The other players to hoist the Stanley Cup in 2026 includes Eric Robinson, Mark Jankowski, William Carrier and Nic Deslauriers.
