Nick Castellanos is not only one of the brightest star outfielders in the majors, following a breakout season in 2021, but he is also known for his tendency to interrupt serious and somber moments during baseball broadcasts by hitting home runs.
With the Phillies hosting the San Francisco Giants at home on Memorial Day Monday, Castellano's blasted a solo homer off Logan Webb, which again, came at another inopportune time for another broadcaster.
NBC Sports broadcaster Tom McCarthy took some time out of the broadcast to describe a new feature at Citizen’s Bank Park that pays tribute to every mother who lost a son or daughter during active service. Almost immediately after such a somber moment, Castellanos hit a bomb to deep left field during the bottom of the second inning in his first at-bat to give the Phillies the lead.
The All-Star outfielder seems to have an unintentional tendency for interrupting moments like these. The first, and arguably the most viral video of those moments came in 2020 when disgraced broadcaster Thom Brennaman, who worked for the Cincinnati Reds at the time, apologized for his homophobic remarks during a double-header between the Reds and the Kansas City Royals. Then in July 2021, Castellano's hit another eerily similar dinger while Royals broadcasters eulogized George Gorman, the father of Royals equipment manager Patrick Gorman, who was a World War II veteran.
Most recently, Castellanos first hit as a member of the Phillies came during Spring Training while Blue Jays analyst Buck Martinez was reading an apology from Blue Jays pitching coach Pete Walker, who had been arrested for a DUI.
If you were keeping track, Monday was the fourth time in less than two years that the 2021 All-Star followed a serious statement from a broadcaster with a home run.
While Castalleno's moments are obviously unintentional, it would be very interesting to see if he is aware of his feats at the plate during serious and somber moments in the broadcast booth.
Castellanos finished Monday's outing going 2-4 at the plate but the Phills still lost to the Giants 5-4, dropping the first game in a three-game series.
