Papelbon: Red Sox players thinking 'WTF' after confusing trade deadline

The Red Sox went ice cold in July, going 7-19 from the 1st through the 30th leading up to the trade deadline. Things were looking bleak but they were still in the hunt for a Wild Card spot.

At first, it looked like they would be sellers after dealing away Christian Vazquez, but then the Sox acquired Tommy Pham and Eric Hosmer to help bolster the lineup.

The sequence of events left many people in the baseball world confused and wondering about what the Red Sox were trying to do.

One of those people was Jonathan Papelbon.

Papelbon gave some insight into what the Red Sox players must be thinking inside the clubhouse after the trade deadline on Audacy’s “The Bradfo Sho” podcast.

“I’ll tell you what they are: WTF,” Papelbon said (10:54 in player above). “WTF is going on? OK. Because as a player, you almost want that GM to kinda be another player and say ‘Alright guys, look, you didn’t cut it this year so we’re gonna cut the cord, we’re sellers,’ and you make it very clear. Or ‘Hey guys, look, we’re fighting our asses off and we’re gonna go out and we’re gonna get you some help.’”

Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom played both sides of that coin.

“I just think with Bloom there’s so many mixed signals,” Papelbon continued. “It’s just like players are sitting there in the clubhouse just with no clue, and that creates doubt and that creates an atmosphere of ‘what’s our job?’ It starts to fester, man, and I think that’s what’s going on.”

The Red Sox have gone 5-7 in 12 games since August 2nd and have been hovering around the .500 mark since a cold stretch in July.

“I think it’s just a real bad deal when the players are sitting there in the clubhouse looking at each other saying ‘what’s going on?’ It’s hard to play that way.”
