The Buffalo Sabres allowed a pair of goals in the third period, before giving up the game-winning goal in overtime to fall to the Detroit Red Wings, 4-3 on Saturday night at KeyBank Center.
It took Detroit just 16 seconds to score the game's first goal and open up a 1-0 lead over the Sabres. Pius Suter was credited with his second goal of the season, as he used a second-chance opportunity to score. Lucas Raymond and Tyler Bertuzzi received the assists.
Buffalo finished the opening period with 12 shots on goal, but failed to score on Alex Nedeljkovic. The team had a power play chance late in the first as well thanks to a Robby Fabbri tripping minor.
Tage Thompson followed up a Jeff Skinner scoring opportunity and tied the score 1-1 midway through the second period. It was Thompson's fourth goal of the season and came on the 17th shot of the game for the Sabres. Skinner was credited with the only assist.
Buffalo's second goal of the game came just over a minute later on the power play. Rasmus Dahlin's shot from the point got past Nedeljkovic after Rasmus Asplund created a screen in front. Dahlin's first goal of the season came with Joe Veleno in the penalty box for holding. Will Butcher and Rasmus Asplund assisted on the goal that made it 2-1 Sabres.
Arttu Ruotsalinen extended the Sabres lead to 3-1 early in the third period on a rebound chance at the side of the net. Colin Miller took the initial shot that found its way to the other side of the crease. Miller and John Hayden were given the assists.
Bertuzzi scored a pair of goals just over a minute apart to draw the Red Wings even with Buffalo, 3-3, in the third period. The forward's first goal of the game came thanks to a broken play in the offensive zone. He was able to beat Dahlin, and then Tokarski to tie the game with his third point of the night.
Moritz Seider's first career NHL goal came nearly three minutes into overtime and secured the come-from-behind victory for Detroit, 4-3. Bertuzzi made the pass in the offensive zone that helped create the opportunity. He was able to receive his third assist and fourth overall point of the game on the goal.
