Rasmus Dahlin shines Thursday in Sweden's quarterfinal round win at World Championship

The Sabres defensemen had a goal and an assist in a 2-1 overtime win over Finland

(WGR Sports Radio 550) – While Dylan Cozens has been stellar through this year's World Championship in Czechia, it was Rasmus Dahlin's time to shine on Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the tournament.

The Buffalo Sabres defenseman scored a goal and added an assist to help lead Sweden to a 2-1 overtime win over Finland in the quarterfinal round.

With the game scoreless, Dahlin scored at the 15:02 mark of the third period to give Sweden the lead.

Hannes Bjorninen tied the game with 58 seconds left in regulation for Finland, sending the game to overtime.

Sweden found itself on the power play in overtime, and Joel Eriksson-Ek (Minnesota Wild) tipped in a Victor Hedman (Tampa Bay Lightning) shot from the point to win it. Dahlin also assisted on the goal, giving a pair of points in 18:43 of playing time.

In eight games in this tournament, Dahlin has two goals and five assists for seven points.

Victor Olofsson had no points in 15:29 of ice-time on Thursday. In seven games in Czechia, Olofsson has one goal and three assists for four points.

Filip Gustavsson (Wild) made 19 saves in goal for the Swedes in the win.

Canada got by Slovakia, 6-3, in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Cozens didn’t put up any points in the win, and also had his six-game goal streak snapped. However, he still leads the tournament with eight goals, to go along with two assists for 10 points in eight games.

The 23-year-old played a total of 16:56 on Thursday.

Defenseman Bo Byram had an assist Thursday, has a goal and four assists for five points in seven games this tournament. He also played 15:37 of ice-time on Thursday.

As for defenseman Owen Power, he played 19:11, which was second for Canada in their win. In eight games played in this tournament, Power has a goal and four assists for five points.

In Thursday’s game, Nick Paul (Lightning) led the way for Canada with two goals and an assist.

Meanwhile, JJ Peterka and Germany got eliminated by Switzerland following a 3-1 loss. Peterka didn’t have any points, but did play 22:49 of total ice-time.

In eight games this year for Germany, Peterka had five goals and four assists for nine points.

In the other quarterfinal game, the host team Czechia got by the United States, 1-0, behind Lukas Dostal’s (Anaheim Ducks) 36 saves.

Czechia got David Pastrnak (Boston Bruins), Pavel Zacha (Bruins) and Martin Necas (Carolina Hurricanes) just in time for Tuesday’s game after their teams got eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It paid off, as Zacha scored the only goal of the game on Charlie Lindgren (Washington Capitals).

Lindgren made 27 saves for the U.S. in the losing effort.

In the semifinal round on Saturday, Canada will play Switzerland, while Sweden will take on Czechia. Both Canada and Sweden are undefeated in eight games, while Switzerland is 7-1-0 and Czechia is 6-0-2.
